    What patients ask us first

Plain answers to the questions every new patient brings to a first phone call — from scheduling and insurance to what treatment actually looks like.

Rest and reassurance — answers before your first visit
How quickly can I be seen?
Most new-patient inquiries hear back within 48 hours, and we offer both in-person and telehealth appointments across Michigan, New Jersey, Florida, and New York. Call the office nearest you or use the contact form to get started.
    Do you prescribe medication?
Yes. Our board-certified psychiatrists, physician assistants, and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide complete medication management. When medication is part of your treatment plan, the prescriber works hand in hand with your therapist.
    Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed to begin care at Cognosis Health. If your insurance plan requires one for coverage purposes, our front desk team will help you sort that out before your first visit.
What happens at the first appointment?
Your initial consultation is a thorough, unhurried evaluation: current symptoms, sleep and eating patterns, family and medical history, and your goals. From there, a board-certified clinician builds a treatment plan specific to you.
Do you treat children and adolescents?
Yes. Several of our clinicians specialize in child and adolescent care, treating patients as young as two for therapy and offering child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry.
    What conditions do you treat?
Anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, mood disorders, sleep disorders, substance use, eating disorders, grief, and relationship and family concerns — among others. If you’re not sure where you fit, start with a conversation.
    Do you accept insurance?
We accept multiple insurance plans, and our billing team will walk you through your coverage before treatment begins so there are no surprises. See our insurance guide for a plain-English overview of how paying for therapy works.
Is telehealth as effective as in-person care?
For many conditions, research shows video-based therapy and medication management deliver comparable outcomes. Many of our patients combine both, choosing whatever fits their week.
What makes your veteran and first responder program different?
It was built by people who have lived it — including clinicians with military service and decades of experience treating PTSD in service members. We understand the culture, the stigma, and the stakes.
    Is what I share confidential?
Yes. Your care is protected by HIPAA and state privacy law. The exceptions — imminent risk of harm to yourself or others — are narrow, and your clinician will explain them clearly at your first visit.
